VC Amy Johnson’s Top Five Tips for Incoming Undergraduate Students

  1. Get to know at least one faculty member very well — this year and every year until you graduate. You’ll build a support network of faculty who can help you throughout your Carolina experience. And when the time comes to apply for a scholarship, an internship, graduate school, or a job, you’ll have a group of faculty who can eloquently speak to your qualifications.
  2. Leave your mark. While at Carolina, get involved in at least one activity each year in which you can make a significant impact and leave a lasting impression. You will build community for yourself and for Carolina — and create a valuable campus support network.
  3. Pursue your passions — new and old. College is a time of inventing and reinventing ourselves: Stretch yourself and try new things. A diverse set of college experiences is valuable in prepping you for whatever path you choose… and it makes you an attractive candidate for jobs, graduate school, and other roles.
  4. Come prepared to engage with new ideas and in conversations you’ve never had before. As needed, we can help you develop strategies to talk across differences, to stay resilient in the face of challenging words, and to remain curious about, and open to conversation with, individuals who think differently than you. Free expression is the foundation of all we do — and our commitment to this ideal makes the Carolina experience a standout.
  5. Start thinking right away about how you can connect who you are today with what you want to do after college. Develop preliminary plans for post-graduation and make small steps each semester, starting year one. It’s okay if things change or your plans don’t go exactly as you expected. Research tells us starting this process early is a top predictor of success in building a successful professional path or landing a job post-college. (Need help with a plan? Visit our UNC Career Center!)
