Carolina’s four Greek councils are standouts for scholarship, community service, philanthropy, engagement, and leadership.
As the fall 2025 semester begins, students who engage with Greek life at Carolina are celebrating achievements across a range of areas of student success including academics, national leadership opportunities, and philanthropy.
According to recent data, for student participants from 2021-2024, grade point averages top out at 3.5. Specifically, several chapters associated with Intercultural Greek Council (IGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) ranked in the top 10 for highest GPA for Greek life at Carolina for the first time in more than a decade. During the same time period, data show that students involved in Greek life enjoyed a 99 percent retention rate, meaning they return to Carolina year after year until graduation.
Ion Outterbridge, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UNC-Chapel Hill, pointed to opportunities for the Greek community to grow in their leadership skills, personal values, and community-based work as part of the councils’ success.
“The Greek experience is unparalleled at Carolina,” he said. “The students keep us motivated, and watching them succeed both during and after college is part of the most rewarding part of my job.”
Throughout the academic year, Greek councils participate in networking and career-building opportunities, philanthropic efforts, and risk management training. During the summer months, chapter leadership frequently attends national council meetings.
For Outterbridge, the Greek experience is a decades-long legacy of fostering student development as students prepare for life after college.
“Carolina’s Greek life participants – both past and present – are driven by the values they develop before, during, and after their college experience,” he said. “We know this makes a difference as they graduate and go on to serve our state.”
