Old Well in the spring

Reminder of student resources

October 4, 2024 | |

This message was sent to the student body on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024.

Dear Carolina students,

Our Tar Heel community includes members from a wide array of perspectives and life experiences, which is one of our many strengths. We hope that you’ll share your views and experiences during your time here — and will demonstrate respect for your colleagues as they do the same. Seek opportunities to learn from others who come from different backgrounds, identities, and beliefs. Lean into the University’s foundational philosophy of free expression as an opportunity to become wiser, more well-rounded, and better able to work with, motivate, and lead diverse people.

At the same time, we want to continue to foster our culture of compassion and care. So, we must thoughtfully exercise our freedom to exchange our views while being mindful of how we demonstrate care for our community.

In this process, we encourage you to take advantage of both the mental health and well-being and the free speech and expression resources available to you:

Free speech and expression resources

  • Our University’s newly launched free speech website combines information regarding rights, policies and how the University prepares for events and demonstrations. It also includes resources for students, faculty and staff for mental health support and how to report discrimination.
  • We also have a page that details guidance for demonstrations and how we affirm the right of members of the University community to assemble and engage in demonstrative activities as long as the activities are lawful and follow our policies. (Any reports of policy violations are assessed in context with our Student Code of Conduct policy and procedures).

Mental health and well-being resources

If you know a fellow Tar Heel who needs help, please submit a Care Referral.

At Carolina, we respect and look out for others in our Tar Heel family. Join us in celebrating World Mental Health Day on October 10: Check out the Heels Care Network events page and find an activity you like to support your own well-being and demonstrate care for our Carolina community.

As always, Go Heels!
