Mixed Methods Learning Series: Planning and Executing Rigorous Integration Procedures in Mixed Methods
This course is for researchers who want to strengthen their intentional planning and execution of rigorous integration procedures across all stages of mixed methods research. We will position integration as a central, skill-based set of methodological decisions that must be deliberately planned, enacted, and documented in order to be fully realized.
Designing and executing high-quality integration procedures requires specialized competencies beyond conducting strong qualitative and quantitative research in parallel. Integration is the key feature that distinguishes mixed methods practice from multi-methods research. To make visible the behind-the-scenes integration work, we draw on examples from diverse settings and mixed methods design configurations (e.g., convergent, sequential, hybrid). Throughout the course, we emphasize how well-executed integration procedures can help mitigate inequities and ethical concerns that may arise when research relies on single sources of qualitative or quantitative evidence.
