Mixed Methods Learning Series: Reflexive Thematic Analysis: Principles and Practice
This workshop will introduce the principles and practice of reflexive thematic analysis (reflexive TA), an approach to analyzing qualitative data that focuses on constructing meaningful patterns across data while recognizing that researchers shape the analysis through their perspectives and active methodological decisions. The course is designed to support participants across levels of experience, offering both theoretical foundations and opportunities to deepen analytic practice. The workshop will be well suited for i) those who are interested in or planning to undertake qualitative research, including as part of a larger mixed-methods project ii) those who have already collected qualitative data and are unsure how to analyze them, and iii) those who supervise or support students using qualitative data.
The workshop will consist of a mix of short lectures, practical activities, and group work. We will introduce the key decisions that researchers need to make to ensure success with the method. We then take a practical approach to lead workshop participants through the six phases of reflexive thematic analysis—from familiarization to coding to generating initial themes. Potential themes are then developed and reviewed, followed by refining, defining, and naming them, and last, producing the report. We will draw on real data to illustrate good practice and enable workshop participants to practice developing their understanding of this foundational method of data analysis.
