Editor's Note: This message was sent as an email to all Carolina students from Vice Chancellor on Friday in advance of the Final Four! Please read closely and incorporate these safety tips as you pull for the Tar Heels at Monday night's Championship game!

Our Tar Heel Men’s Basketball team is returning to the Final Four for a record 21st time this weekend. This historic semi-final game against Duke will be played on Saturday, and the National Championship game is slated for Monday. Victories in these games will undoubtedly be cause for celebration. We care about you, and we want you to be safe!

Please review the information below so that everyone can enjoy a fun and safe celebration.

Enjoy the Game Safely

Have a plan for your evening and keep your cell phone charged. Travel in groups and stay with people you know and trust. Respect your fellow Tar Heels and the community, and follow all campus, local and state ordinances.

If you do choose to go to Franklin Street, remember that Town of Chapel Hill ordinances and State statutes prohibit the following items: alcoholic beverages; weapons of any kind; glass bottles; paint; fireworks and explosives; flammable substances; animals; coolers; furniture.

With the potential for thousands of people in close quarters on Franklin and Columbia Streets, it is important to be mindful of yourself and your friends and to make safe choices. As a reminder, bonfires are not permittedand are in violation of town regulations.  Visit the Town of Chapel Hill website for more information.

Please do your part to keep our Tar Heel celebrations fun and safe.

Alcohol

If you decide to consume alcohol, limit intake to remain alert and in control at all times. Be sure to eat throughout the night and to stay hydrated. Intoxication is a factor in most injuries that occur during events like this. Read tips about responsible drinking and celebrating at the UNC Healthy Heels blog and on our alcohol policy website.

Residence Halls, Greek Houses and Off Campus Homes

There will be an increased number of non-student visitors to the area. Ensure your residences and cars are secured at all times. For residence halls, it is imperative to avoid tailgating or letting non-residents into the halls. We can all work to decrease the opportunity for crime and property damage that can occur at such times.

For off-campus residents living near downtown, be aware that traffic and parking may be restricted in and around your neighborhood. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to being ticketed and towed.

Please remember to be kind to those around you and particularly mindful of noise in our residential neighborhoods.

UNC Transportation and Parking

On-campus parking rules will change for this weekend. In addition, several streets may be temporarily inaccessible during any celebrations. Visit the Transportation and Parking website for more details.

This is such an exciting time to be at Carolina! As we root for our Men’s Basketball team, don’t forget: Tar Heels look out for each other.

Enjoy yourselves and stay safe!

Go Heels!
