COVID-19 UPDATE: Community Standards Conduct Summary Report

Dear Carolina Community,    

Last November, in response to campus feedback, we announced that we will share key data summarizing our COVID-19 Community Standards referrals for violations and outcomes on our Carolina Together website at least once a quarter. Today we are updating that data to reflect the latest information between Nov. 1, 2020, and Jan. 31, 2021. 

As I shared in the fall, it is clear that the majority of Carolina students are working hard each day to follow our COVID-19 Community Standards. In a year in which we have asked so much of our students, I acknowledge with great pride and appreciation their efforts and dedication to the safety of our campus community.    

We share this data in the spirit of transparency and to illustrate our commitment to our Community Standards. As a reminder, we will share this data in a way that balances our desire for transparency with safeguarding individuals’ privacy rights. Effective today, you will see the following data provided on the Carolina Together website:

Every referral is reviewed to assess whether the reported action, if verifiable, represents a violation of the standards. 

Reporting Alleged Community Standards Violations 
If you witness activities that are not in compliance with the COVID-19 Community Standards, we encourage you to call the police immediately (callers may choose to remain anonymous), as reports made after the fact are more difficult to investigate, so they may formally document the incident. You may also refer behavior to Student Conduct, and they will review and address it as appropriate. We do not endorse social media as the place to report alleged violations of our COVID-19 Community Standards, and we do not monitor social media accounts for violations. 

Spring Testing and Contact Tracing Requirements 
Please note that the COVID-19 Community Standards require students who live in the Chapel Hill or Carrboro area to get tested once a week, even if their classes are being taught remotely, and twice a week if they live on campus or have any in-person classes. The University regularly reviews testing data to identify students who are not in compliance. 

Likewise, we require student cooperation with contact tracing efforts and compliance with quarantine and isolation directives for students exposed to COVID-19 or who test positive. These two facets of our public health response are of the utmost importance to address the safety of students, faculty, staff and neighbors here in Chapel Hill. Failure to participate in contact tracing or to comply with quarantine or isolation instructions are also violations of the Community Standards.
