There are a number of resources, activities and services available for students who find themselves in Chapel Hill over summer break.
Where to eat

Carolina Dining Services
Top of Lenoir and Rams Head Dining are generally closed during the summer, but many dining locations on campus are open including restaurants in Lenior as well as Rams Market. Students can use flex to order delivery anywhere on campus from Takeout Central (access to delivery from over 30 local restaurants), Brenz Pizza, Domino’s and Wings Over Chapel Hill.

On Campus
- Carolina Cupboard is an on-campus food pantry that provides food at no cost to students who are facing food insecurity.
- UNC Y Mutual Aid Pantry has a variety of food options available to students, faculty, and staff at no cost.
- Food and Nutrition Services (Food Stamps) – Eligibility criteria and application can be found online on the NC DHHS website.
Chapel Hill/Carrboro
- Interfaith-Council for Social Services is an organization in Carrboro that offers various programs including a community kitchen serving free hot nutritious meals daily, drop-in access to computers, phones, and other supports, a community market providing free fresh food, pantry staples, and hygiene items, and emergency financial assistance.
- CORA hosts a mobile market at the Nature Trail Mobile Home Park in Chapel Hill on the second Tuesday of each month from 3-5 p.m. CORA’s Mobile Market provides nutritious food at no cost to neighbors via drive-through.
Durham
- Urban Ministries of Durham: Food pantry and community cafe serving three meals per day.
- Durham Community Food Pantry
- Durham Community Fridges is a mutual aid project supporting equal access to fresh food available to anyone in need of food. The fridge is located at 1902 W. Main St. in Durham and can be accessed between 6 a.m.-9:00 p.m. See what’s in the fridge on their Instagram page.
Things to do around and off campus

- Triangle on the Cheap is a resource that helps you find free and cheap things to do throughout the Triangle every day of the year:
- Start your weekend off with Fridays on the Front Porch every Friday evening beginning April 19 at the Carolina Inn. Enjoy live music and cuisine from a weekly food truck lineup.
- Shop for local produce at farmers’ markets in your area. There are many markets in the Triangle but here are a few: Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market, Carrboro Farmers’ Market, Durham Farmers’ Market
- Visit the North Carolina Botanical Gardens
- Twilight Thursdays at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens: Every Thursday from April 4 to June 13; the gardens are open until 7 p.m.
- Visit the Sarah P. Duke Gardens
- Attend events on the Southern Village Green including Sundays at Sundown Live Music
- Carolina and the surrounding area offer many opportunities for nature walks and hikes. Our Healthy Heels blog outlines many ways students can get outside and explore nature around UNC-Chapel Hill.
- Explore history at Triangle museums, many of which offer free admission.
- Get active with Free Fitness Classes and Events
Service hours
During summer break, on-campus services hours may change. Visit the department’s website for additional information and the most updated hours of operation.
Mental Health and Counseling and Psychological Services
- The Heels Care Network is a mental health web resource for our entire community, and shares 24/7 resources, as well as those operating with regular business hours.
- Counseling and Psychological Services: Operates with regular hours in the summer. Walk-in initial assessments are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Urgent needs will be seen Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 24/7 by phone. Call 919-966-3658 to speak with a mental health professional 24/7.
Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services
Support and services provided by Gender Violence Services Coordinators and Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services will be available during the summer months. Email [email protected] or call 919-962-1343 to schedule a time to meet. Campus Health
Campus Health: Offers weekday hours in the summer from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Any time Campus Health is closed, patients can receive 24/7 support by calling 919-966-2281 for UNC Nurse Connect. Campus Health Pharmacy will maintain regular hours this summer; Student Stores Pharmacy will close for most of the summer after graduation due to mini-clinic construction.
Campus Recreation
Campus Recreation: Campus Recreation will be closed May 11 and May 12, with break hours on May 13 and May 14. Visit the Campus Recreation website for more information.

Frank Porter Graham Student Union
The Carolina Union will be open 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m. most weekdays over the break, but hours may vary by holidays and orientation needs. Call the facility at (919) 962-2285 for more information.
UNC-Chapel Hill Student Stores
UNC Student Stores will maintain 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. hours during weekdays and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekends.
The Writing and Learning Center
The Writing and Learning Center offices in SASB North are open business hours Monday through Friday. Academic coaching and peer tutoring are available when undergraduate classes are in session.

University Libraries
- Undergraduate Library will be open most weekdays 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Davis Library will be open most weekdays 8 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. – 5 p.m., and Sundays 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. During intersessions (between academic sessions), weekday hours will be 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed weekends.
- Library hours vary by facility, holidays, and academic sessions.
Chapel Hill Transit
The Safe Ride route will not operate May 16- TBA; other routes will remain on regular schedules. GoTriangle also offers options to students exploring beyond Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
