The Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) is a student organization working to support Carolina’s LGBTQ+ community. Community Involvement Chair Ananya Raman shares her experience with SAGA:
- What is SAGA all about?
Sexuality and Gender Alliance seeks to foster a strong LGBTQ+ community at UNC! Our goal is to promote the welfare and unity of all LGBTQ+ folks on campus.
- How do you help students?
SAGA helps students primarily by hosting events such as Queer Prom, monthly movie nights, social justice opportunities, and much more. We also hold collaborations with other student organizations to promote the intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ identity.
- What do you like most about being a member of SAGA?
Personally, my favorite thing about being a SAGA member is how accepting the club and overall community is. Since it was my first time joining a publicly LGBTQ+ space, I was initially a little apprehensive. However, everyone in the club is very kind and welcoming, which encouraged me to become more involved in SAGA!
- What resources or advice would you like to give to UNC’s LGBTQ community?
My greatest advice to UNC’s LGBTQ+ community is that you are not alone. No matter who you are, there is a place for you on this campus. I encourage UNC’s LGBTQ+ community to utilize resources on campus: student organizations such as SAGA, academic LGBTQ+ organizations, and the LGBTQ center, which has many resources about exploring identities and other ways to get involved in the LGBTQ+ community.
- How can students get involved with SAGA?
Students can get involved in SAGA simply by attending events! There are no requirements to attend meetings, which leaves a lot of room for flexibility. Everyone is very welcoming, and we have a variety of events throughout the year so there is something for everyone. Our events are open to everyone, and we look forward to meeting you!
