Student Org Spotlight: ASL at UNC-CH

- What is ASL at UNC-CH all about?
At ASL-UNC, we focus on learning and practicing American Sign Language, as well as learning about Deaf culture from online Deaf teachers and content creators. In our weekly meetings, we learn vocabulary from ASL University, a free online curriculum created by Bill Vicars, a Deaf teacher. We also watch videos about Deaf life and culture, as we believe learning about Deaf culture from the Deaf community is extremely important in addition to learning signs.
- How do you help students?
We are a very beginner-friendly and welcoming community, with most of our members at the novice level or complete beginners! We want to provide students with a space to learn ASL and about Deaf culture in hopes of fostering a more inclusive community for Deaf and Hard of Hearing community members.
- What do you like most about being a member of ASL at UNC-CH?
As an exec leader, I love being a part of the club. The rest of the executive team and all of our club members are so kind, and I've made many friends through my time with the club. My ASL has also significantly improved, so it's great having a community to learn and practice with.
- Do you have any ASL at UNC-CH resources to share?
On our Linktree, we provide links to many resources we recommend for learning, including our main resources page as well as our club Google Drive folder which holds our Powerpoint slides. We also share and re-post ASL and Deaf content on our club Instagram.
- How can students get involved with ASL at UNC-CH?
For students who are interested in joining, join our Heel Life page and our GroupMe chat, both linked on our Linktree page, and come to a meeting! This semester, meetings are Wednesdays from 5-6pm in Woollen 301.
