All requests to use departmental budgets for software, hardware, or accessories, are managed through the RASR system (IT > Access and Equipment > Hardware/Software Request). Certain types of purchases must also be approved by the supervisor or department head. So, it’s a good idea to ensure upper management is aware of requests or simply route all requests through a supervisor or office manager.
Software Orders
Software may be freely available on shareware.unc.edu or by pressing the Windows Key on your computer and typing “Software Center”. Software requiring licenses, generally for a price, can be found at UNC Software Distribution. Finally, on most computers, you can visit office.unc.edu to download the various Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
Equipment Orders
Each year, SAIT works with Student Affairs finance to order life-cycle equipment (computers, monitors, and accessories) to support each department. The availability of funds may limit our success in covering these expenses for each department. We aim to replace laptops every 4 years and desktops every 5 years. Monitors and other accessories are replaced only as needed. Printers are generally not replaced and instead, we lease multi-function Xerox copiers through Carolina Managed Print Services.
