Brian Lackman | Associate

Director of Student Life and Leadership | Carolina Union | One Year

What’s the name of your hometown?

Philadelphia PA

Describe your role as Assistant Director of Student Life and Leadership in the Carolina Union.

I oversee leadership development in SLL. A large part of my role is supporting my team to give them the tools they need in order to develop and implement meaningful learning experiences with the campus community. Whether it’s through large scale high impact programs, civic engagement, leadership courses, etc. I want to ensure that they are setup for success. I also get to oversee the leadership educators group which involves staff and faculty from across UNC and more.

What do you like most about your work?

I love the chance to engage in meaningful dialogue around leadership and personal development with students and colleagues. Leadership is always happening and it’s so critical that we find ways to help each other not just deconstruct problems but engage in a constructive process.

What’s your favorite work memory?

Attending and supporting the SPARK retreat this fall semester. It was in my first month in the role along with one of my coordinators and other students and it was exceptional.

What’s one of your favorite things?

Getting out and enjoying nature with my dog while listening to a podcast or catching up with friends.

What are you listening to? (music/podcast/ book)

All of the podcasts but current favorites include: why won’t you date me, Strict Scrutiny, how to save a planet, the ringer-verse, and many more

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Come and visit us in SLL or if you have a baking request come through with it!
