Berengére Phillips | Assistant Director | Fraternity & Sorority Life | 3.5 Years

Describe your role as Assistant Director

I advise the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council, facilitate and provide leadership development opportunities, spearhead our inaugural speaker series initiative, and work with students to become impactful leaders of their organizations.

How has the transition to everyone being back in-person gone?

The scheduling changes took some time getting used to with family obligations, a longer commute, and my daughter starting kindergarten, but so far we've made it work - many thanks to having a supportive supervisor!

What do you like most about your work?

In terms of what I do, I most enjoy seeing our students find the right fit for success. Accommodations ensure access, not success. So to see them grow and achieve that once the I like when my students talk about the impact their leadership position has had on them and the growth and development they've experienced. I also like being able to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion conversations and initiatives into my work in various ways.

Is there a lesson learned from working through the pandemic that you are applying now that students are back on campus?

To prioritize health and wellness and to give grace where it's due because everyone experiences things differently than the next person.

What are you listening to? (music/podcast/ book)

I can't get into podcasts or audiobooks and I still listen to the radio (lol) I'm currently reading a fictional book entitled Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

While I'd love to connect with everyone, I'll be out on maternity leave until January - see you next semester!
