Amy Sauls | Director of Pharmacy and Professional Services | Campus Health
12 years at Carolina
Describe your role as Director of Pharmacy and Professional Services.
I am in charge of the pharmacy, lab, and radiology departments at Campus Health. I also manage our International Travel Clinic, and I am providing direction as we open a dental clinic at Campus Health. This year, I’ve helped to lead our Campus Health efforts around COVID, particularly in the contact tracing and vaccination spaces.
How is your work now different from a traditional academic year?
At the moment, my work is very much centered around COVID testing, contact tracing, and vaccinations. I haven’t been able to spend as much time in my pharmacy work space, but I have gotten to work more closely with colleagues throughout Student Affairs.
What has been the biggest challenge with the switch to remote learning?
From a teaching perspective, I co-direct a Travel Medicine class at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and it has been challenging to provide the same type of “hands-on” patient care experience in a Zoom environment. From a pharmacy patient care perspective, we have added curbside delivery, online OTC product ordering, and video counseling around certain prescriptions in an effort to reach out to those students who are not physically in our building.
How are you maintaining a sense of community among those you serve?
We are encouraging our staff and students to live out the Carolina Together mantra. For me, that means focusing efforts on taking care of one another, and remembering to show everyone, including ourselves, grace during this tough time.
What do you like most about your work?
I love seeing and learning from the dedication, hard work, and expertise of my colleagues.
What is one thing you hope will stay the same once things return to normal?
I have truly enjoyed working more closely with other departments in Student Affairs such as Housing, DOS, and IT. I hope these relationships continue, because I believe it results in overall better care and service to our students.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am so proud to be a Carolina alumnus, parent, and employee. It is an honor to be a Tar Heel!
