Inaugural Tar Heel Food Donation Drive Launches in November

On November 3, the Dean of Students office, in partnership with areas across campus, will launch a fall food drive, the first of its kind on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus as part of our community of compassion and care. As we anticipate an increase in pantry usage in November and December, this collaborative campuswide food drive will benefit the Carolina Food Pantry Network and other pantries at UNC to support the Carolina community. National data from the 2023-2024 Hope Center’s Basic Needs Survey found that 48 percent of college and university students experienced food insecurity in the past year.

The drive will run from November 3-17. Members of the Carolina community can donate any non-expired, unopened shelf stable items like canned or boxed goods, cooking oils, rice and pasta, instant coffee, condiments, seasoning, and toiletry items. Family-focused items like diapers, wipes, formula, and toiletry items for children are also common requests. Visit the Dean of Students website for a robust list of items.

Donation locations:

This food drive is in conjunction with the Pantry Bowl, a friendly competition between UNC and NC State to see who can raise the most monetary donations for their campus pantries. Student groups, departments, and offices are encouraged to bring their collected donations to the Pantry Bowl: Giving in Action event at The Pit on November 17 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Donations can also be delivered to one of the donation locations listed above.
