Implementing our new Student Conduct process

The message below was sent to our campus community on Friday, August 16, 2024.

Dear Carolina community,

As we shared with you earlier this summer, the start of the academic semester will mark the implementation of our new student conduct process. The updated policies for student code of conduct and procedures are now available on the University’s ethics and policy website.

Our new system will maintain student leadership roles, including service on hearing board panels, as student advisors, and as members of an advisory committee. It will also be responsive to the nuanced needs of all our students, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional.

We want to highlight a few of the things we are changing in the new student conduct process to benefit our community:

  • Revising the University’s conduct policies and procedures to be simpler, more congruent, and easier to understand.
  • Streamlining the adjudication process to make it a more prompt and consistent experience for our students, with student and faculty leadership roles that are more manageable and considerate of their time and responsibilities.
  • Allowing for informal resolution of cases, which we anticipate will offer a simpler and faster path to resolution for many alleged violations.

We are grateful for our student leaders who have upheld the University’s honor system with pride and dedication for many decades. While our policies are evolving to meet the needs of our present-day student conduct environment, we will maintain Carolina’s long-standing commitment to honor and integrity. We rely on all Tar Heels to model these values both inside and outside the classroom. If you’re a student, staff, or faculty member interested in leadership opportunities within the conduct system, please let us know using this form.

Thank you for the vital role you play in supporting our community’s success and in maintaining our high standards of personal integrity and academic excellence.

Sincerely,

J. Christopher Clemens
