Lobito-Bound: Film Screening and Dialogue on Africa
The International Program for Scholarship, Innovation, Teaching, and Engagement (INSITE)-Africa will launch the academic year with an event that brings together students, faculty, and community members for an evening of film, dialogue, and critical reflection on Africa’s place in a rapidly changing global landscape.
The event will feature a screening of Lobito-Bound: A Journey to Africa’s New Frontier, an award-winning documentary that follows British Jamaican explorer Dwayne Fields along the Lobito Corridor, a major infrastructure and trade initiative stretching across Central Africa. As global demand for critical minerals grows and international powers compete for economic and geopolitical influence, the film explores how development projects reshape local economies, communities, and futures.
Following the screening, there will be a scholarly dialogue with faculty from the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies. They will examine the broader themes raised by the film, such as resources and resource extraction, and contemporary debates about sovereignty, agency, and sustainable growth.
Faculty panelists are Professors Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja, Samba Camara, Shakirah Hudani, and Kevin Irakoze. This event will be held from 5 – 7:30 pm in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium, FedEx Global Education Center. Refreshments will be served.
