Carolina Summer Orientation Underway

June 15, 2017 |

New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) hired more than 70 talented and diverse student leaders (Orientation Leaders, Project Coordinators, Tar Heel Beginnings Co-Chairs & Board Members, Transfer Student Ambassadors and Undergraduate Fellows) to help welcome more than 8,000 new students and their families to UNC Chapel Hill.  All of our student leaders and staff work together to implement New Student & Family Orientation, Summer Send-Offs, Week of Welcome (WOW), New Student Convocation, Tar Heel Beginnings Programming, Carolina Family Weekend and more. These students and staff will work throughout the year to create a welcoming environment for our students and family members.

Every summer, New Student & Family Programs hosts New Student & Family Orientation, a series of two-day programs aimed at facilitating a smooth transition into UNC. Students learn about the Carolina curriculum, meet faculty, staff and students and engage in conversations about the expectations, responsibilities and opportunities related to living and learning in our diverse Carolina community. Families are invited to attend an orientation that runs concurrently with their students’ orientation. Through both joint sessions with students, as well as exclusive presentation just for family members, families learn about basics like academic expectations, curriculum and academic advising. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp speaks to families about the importance of partnering with the University to support their children during this major transition. First-year students are required to attend a two-day program in June, July, or August. Transfer students are required to attend a one-day program that is also held over four dates in the summer.
