SUMMARY:AI in Research Series – Using AI in Survey Research: Practices and Pitfalls
DESCRIPTION:AI in Research Series – Using AI in Survey Research: Practices and Pitfalls\n\nAI in Research: Driving Innovation Forward\n \nDiscover how artificial intelligence can streamline workflows\, uncover hidden patterns\, and empower breakthroughs in your field. Learn practical applications of AI through Odum Institute AIR series that can revolutionize your research process.\nThis course offers an overview of how AI tools such as large language models (LLMS) can enhance early stages of the survey process\, including item generation\, questionnaire evaluation\, and survey refinement. This session will highlight practical ways LLMs such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can support researchers while also addressing common pitfalls. Participants will learn best practices for questionnaire design focusing on writing questions\, response option development\, and question ordering. Ideal for researchers seeking to incorporate AI thoughtfully and efficiently during survey development work. The first half of the session will provide structured lecture content\, and the second half will offer time for participants to ask questions and discuss the specific projects they are working on. \nRegistration is required to secure your spot. To learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 1:00 PM\n to 2:00 PM EDT\n at Online.

SUMMARY:Attention on Campus: A Paid Student Focus Group Study
DESCRIPTION:Attention on Campus: A Paid Student Focus Group Study\n\nUNC undergraduates are invited to participate in a paid research study exploring how attention actually unfolds in daily campus life. The study looks at what helps—and what disrupts—students’ ability to feel present\, mentally engaged\, and focused in classes\, study spaces\, campus environments\, and co-curricular activities. Your perspective will directly inform ongoing research on student experience at UNC. \nParticipants will attend one 60-minute focus group with 6–8 other students\, facilitated by trained graduate researchers. The session is a guided but conversational discussion designed to surface honest insight. No preparation is required. Focus groups will be held in a UNC classroom; the specific location will be shared after registration. Participation is open to current undergraduate students who are at least 18 years old. \nMore information here: tarheels.live/attention/student-focus-groups/ \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 2:00 PM\n to 3:00 PM EDT\n at Location will be shared with registered participants!.

SUMMARY:Write On! Therapeutic Writing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Write On! Therapeutic Writing Retreat\n\nTake a mindful pause and explore the power of words. Writing can be a simple yet profound way to reduce stress\, process emotions\, and connect more deeply with yourself. During this one-hour retreat\, you’ll experience guided therapeutic writing exercises inspired by the work of J.W. Pennebaker\, Ph.D.\, and J.F. Evans\, Ed.D.\, designed to help you slow down\, reflect\, and release. \nYou’ll be introduced to several styles of therapeutic writing — from expressive and letter-writing to gratitude writing. You will be given writing prompts and your writing will remain private and not shared. Any student – undergraduate\, graduate\, professional\, or post-doc – is welcome to attend. The retreat will begin and close with a meditation. \nWhether you’re curious about how writing can support your wellbeing or just want a calm\, creative space to breathe and reflect\, this retreat is for you. Come with an open mind and a willingness to write your way toward greater clarity and calm. \nRegistrations are limited to 15 people. On the day of the event\, check in at the CAPS front desk on the 3rd floor of Campus Health.  \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 3:30 PM\n to 4:30 PM EDT\n at CAPS – 3rd Floor.

SUMMARY:Getting Proper about Prompting: An Introduction to Prompt Engineering for Social Science and Survey Research (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Getting Proper about Prompting: An Introduction to Prompt Engineering for Social Science and Survey Research\n\nTake a glance through recent news or social media and you would be hard-pressed not to see mentions of chatbots and artificial intelligence (AI) methods aimed at generating text\, images and other content.  Recent work by Eloundou and colleagues (2023) explored the potential impact of these types of generative AI on labor markets\, and survey research\, specifically was among the top two most impacted industries.  Professor Andrew Ng has been cited as saying “AI won’t replace human workers\, but ‘people that use it will replace people that don’t.’”  Much of the way researchers in the social sciences and survey research are incorporating AI into their workflow involves some type of prompting.  Prompt Engineering approaches along with more nuanced fine tuning approaches are being used and refined to better incorporate more robust approaches for AI incorporation into the research process.  In this shortcourse we will provide an overview of the emerging field of prompt engineering and illustrate how a prompt engineering approach and problem specification mindset can be useful for maximizing the utility of large language models\, specifically\, within social science.  Concepts and experimental approaches will be illustrated using several real-world\, grounded and published work.  The shortcourse also incorporates an experiential component that encourages participants to apply basic concepts that we cover in the course in real-time as we work on exercises together in the later part of the course. \nRegistration and a refundable deposit is required to receive Zoom link. Deposit will be refunded upon attendance of course. \nTo learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Thursday\, April 30\, 2026 1:00 PM\n to 5:00 PM EDT\n at Online.
