SUMMARY:EMES Seminar Speaker - Dr. Robert Spencer\, Florida State University
DESCRIPTION:EMES Seminar Speaker – Dr. Robert Spencer\, Florida State University\n\nOrganic matter holds a richness of molecular-level information that can be linked to sources\, processing\, and ultimately its environmental role. In recent decades the rise of ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry has led to enhanced ability in resolving organic matter molecular complexity and opening the black box linking organic matter to the rapidly changing world around us. Combining this technique with other analytical tools recent studies will be described that highlight from the Arctic to the Equator the human impact on the carbon cycle at the molecular level. Examples will focus on permafrost thaw in the Arctic\, the impact of agriculture in the tropics\, and the utility of glacier ecosystems for providing a window into anthropogenic impacts through depositional processes globally. Linking ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry techniques to other analyses\, particularly the use of radiocarbon\, these examples highlight how humans are impacting the carbon cycle in a myriad of ways across a range of ecosystems. \nTo receive CLE Credit\, you must attend in person. \n\n\n\n From Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026 1:30 PM\n to 2:30 PM EDT\n at Mitchell Hall 005.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Lunchbox Talk: Bridging the Knowledge-to-Practice Gap: Hemiparasitic Plants in Grassland Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Lunchbox Talk: Bridging the Knowledge-to-Practice Gap: Hemiparasitic Plants in Grassland Restoration\n\nwith Jordan Argrett\, University of Georgia Odum School of Ecology PhD Candidate \nGrasslands across North America\, including the remnant prairies\, glades\, and savannas of the Southeast\, are some of the most diverse and threatened ecosystems on Earth. Urban growth\, habitat fragmentation\, and changes in natural disturbances like fire and grazing have made it harder to restore native plant diversity at scale. In this Lunchbox Talk\, learn about Jordan Argrett’s research on an underused restoration tool: native root hemiparasitic plants. These plants form symbiosis by tapping into the roots of their neighbors for nutrients. Acting as “pseudo-grazers\,” they can make big impacts on plant communities by curbing dominant species\, rebalancing the competitive landscape\, and creating space for native wildflowers to thrive. Drawing on experimental ecology\, conservation horticulture\, and restoration strategies\, Jordan’s work aims to provide southeastern conservation practitioners with practical\, scalable tools to help bring back biodiversity. \n  \nIn person and virtual registration options are available. Register here! \n\n\n\n From Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 12:00 PM\n to 1:00 PM EDT\n at Reeves Auditorium – NC Botanical Garden.

SUMMARY:Research in Exercise and Sport Science
DESCRIPTION:Research in Exercise and Sport Science\n\nMany students who are majoring within Exercise and Sport Science at UNC-CH are passionate individuals with goals to serve the population through medicine\, personal training\, physical therapy\, and occupational therapy. The field of medicine\, therapy\, and sports psychology is constantly progressing due to research that is conducted from teams of professionals like the ones who make up UNC-CH’s Exercise and Sport Science Department. Moreover\, with many students wishing to serve populations through the research that is gained through exercise and sport science\, it is important that they know how this research is conducted and where they can go to help contribute to this research. Many students within the Pre-Physical-Occupational Therapy club also have a desire to go and meet new people. This event being held in person would be an opportunity for any science-majoring student to go and learn about rigorous\, academic research while making new connections with other students and faculty. \nThe premise of this event would be to shed light upon the collaboration within the field of exercise and sport science and how the research conducted by faculty at UNC-CH translates into practical knowledge used to advance the fields of physical and occupational therapy. \n\n\n\n From Thursday\, April 23\, 2026 7:00 PM\n to 8:30 PM EDT\n at Woollen Gym Room 301.

SUMMARY:24th Annual Linguistics Spring Colloquium (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:24th Annual Linguistics Spring Colloquium\n\nEvery spring\, the Linguistics Graduate Student Association (LGSA) at UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Linguistics puts on its annual Spring Colloquium\, a celebration of research in linguistics. This year’s event includes a poster session featuring the work of our department’s graduate students\, followed by a keynote talk titled “On the nature of word-internal language mixing” by Dr. Faruk Akkuş of the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. The Colloquium is free for all who present or attend; there is no registration fee. \nThis talk deals with the language mixing patterns in the verbal and nominal domains of Turkish\, Anatolian Arabic and Northern Kurdish\, initially investigated in Akkuş 2025. In that study\, I proposed the No-Reversal Constraint (NRC)\, which prohibits switching back to a language that has been externalized earlier in the derivation. Focusing on rarely studied trilingual settings\, this talk broadens the empirical coverage of this constraint\, and addresses two issues left unaddressed in Akkuş 2025. I demonstrate that word-internal language mixing takes place even in the absence of phonological and morphological integration\, and in some cases phonological processes do not track each other. As such\, this phenomenon cannot simply be a case of borrowing\, and the NRC applies regardless of the level of integration. Moreover\, I demonstrate that the NRC applies at the domain of morphosyntactic words\, regulating the possible permutations of switches\, and further show that the NRC is a structural\, not linear-based constraint \n\n\n\n From Friday\, April 24\, 2026 3:30 PM\n to 6:00 PM EDT\n at Smith 107.

The lecture\, “Book Banning in 21st Century America: An Ongoing Threat to Information Access\,” will take place on Friday\, April 24\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Freedom Forum\, Carroll Hall Room 305\, and will be followed by a reception with hors d’oeuvres and conversation from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. \nThe first 50 people to RSVP will receive a complimentary copy of Emily Knox’s “Book Banning in 21st-Century America.“ \nHR 7661\, or the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act\, recently passed out of the U.S. House Committee on Education. The bill is the first attempt at federal legislation in the post-2020 book banning era. The bill is short\, but it provides insight into the types of information that can be seen as threatening. What would the effect of this bill be? What can it tell us about book banning more generally\, and how do we respond to this type of legislation? \nAbout the Lucille Kelling Henderson Lecture:\nThe Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile K. Henderson\, SILS faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960). As an excellent teacher\, administrator\, counselor and adviser\, Henderson made many contributions to the University and to the profession. She died in 1990 at the age of 95. To learn more about the Henderson Lecture and previous speakers\, click here. \nMore about Emily Knox:\nEmily is interim dean and professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests include information access\, intellectual freedom and censorship. She is a member of the Mapping Information Access research team. \nThe second edition of her book\, Book Banning in 21st Century America (Bloomsbury)\, was published in January 2026. Her previous book\, Foundations of Intellectual Freedom (ALA Neal-Schuman)\, won the 2023 Eli M. Oboler Prize for best published work in the area of intellectual freedom. She has been interviewed by media outlets such as NPR and the New York Times and also testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on book banning. \nEmily previously served on the boards of the National Coalition Against Censorship\, the Freedom to Read Foundation and is a former editor of the Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy. \nShe received her Ph.D. from the doctoral program at the Rutgers University School of Communication & Information. \n\n\n\n From Friday\, April 24\, 2026 5:30 PM\n to 7:15 PM EDT\n at Carroll Hall\, Freedom Forum\, Room 305.
