SUMMARY:2026 Climate Change Symposium
DESCRIPTION:2026 Climate Change Symposium\n\nJoin us for CLE credit and an exciting series of conversations about one of the world’s most pressing issues! You have a stake in the health of the environment\, and in the midst of a rapidly changing climate\, it is critical that we share our most current understanding in order to coordinate the fight against climate change. \nHosted by SEEDS at UNC-CH\, this year’s Annual Climate Change Symposium will be held throughout the day next week on April 21st in Wilson Library’s Pleasants Family Assembly Room. Put on almost every year since 2010\, this event brings together students\, faculty\, and professionals to discuss climate change and think about pathways to solutions\, from policy to technology. Anyone interested is welcome to attend any part of the event which will last from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. See more details below. \nAbout the event:The day will start with bagels\, an intro\, and speaker sessions\, featuring presentations by UNC Professor Nancy Guo on Carbon Capture\, Dr. Melissa Malkin-Weber on Clean Energy\, and SELC’s Ramona McGee on Wildlife Conservation Policy. A panel will follow\, with panelists bringing perspectives from local\, organizational\, and international levels of climate and environmental management\, then a bring-your-own-lunch break during which you can join one of the breakout workshops\, one by Climate Journalist Justin Cook on Climate Communication\, and one by Sunrise on Student Activism. After lunch\, we will have a networking session during which you can hear from students giving poster presentations and tabling student organizations\, before closing with Climate Hero awards. If any of these sound interesting\, we’d love for you to RSVP to participate! There is no obligation to stay for the entire duration. \nPlease feel free to contact zikbaj@unc.edu if you have any questions or need more information\, and we hope to see you there! \nRSVP: https://forms.gle/TG6SQ4kxNDZ2f52T7 \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026 9:00 AM\n to 2:30 PM EDT\n at Pleasants Family Assembly Room\, Wilson Library.

SUMMARY:"Human-in-the-Loop” Thematic Analysis: Using R to Apply Current Recommendations for Incorporating LLMs into Qualitative Research (online)
DESCRIPTION:“Human-in-the-Loop” Thematic Analysis: Using R to Apply Current Recommendations for Incorporating LLMs into Qualitative Research (online)\n\nDo you want to explore current research recommendations in the literature on incorporating LLMs into qualitative/mixed methods data analysis\, or are you interested in implementing LLMs into your qualitative/mixed methods workflow?  If so\, this short course is designed for you! \nIn this course we will examine current recommendations from the literature regarding integrating AI (specifically LLMs) into the process of qualitative coding.  Acknowledging that a wide range of qualitative approaches exist\, all examples and recommendations in this course will be based on the 6 Phase Thematic Analysis Framework proposed by Braun & Clarke 2006 to simplify the course scope. \nNo perquisites in qualitative methods or coding are required for this course – just bring your computer & your curiosity! \nIn the course we will: \n1)        Review the qualitative approach of Thematic Analysis using the Braun & Clarke Framework \n2)        Get a high-level\, very big picture understanding of LLMs\, what they are & how they generate “natural language” \n3)        Examine current recommendations in the literature on incorporating LLMs in Thematic Analysis \n4)        Do hands-on activities in R that implement some of the current recommendations using the Braun & Clarke Framework.  We will compare our results to published results generated by all human coders using the same data \nMinimum computer requirements for full participation are as follows: \n– RAM: At least 16 GB of random access memory \n– GPU: A graphics card with at least 16 GB of VRAM (video memory) \n– Disk Space: About 16 GB of free space on your hard drive or SSD \nPlease install the most recent version of the following software prior to class.  Be sure to install the version for your operating system and please install R prior to installing R Studio. \n–            R: https://cran.r-project.org/ \n–            R Studio: https://posit.co/download/rstudio-desktop/ \n–            Ollama: https://ollama.com/ \nRegistration and a refundable deposit is required to receive Zoom link. Deposit will be refunded upon attendance of course. \nTo learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026 10:00 AM\n to Wednesday\, April 22\, 2026 2:00 PM EDT\n at Online.
