SUMMARY:Gettin’ daggity with it: Using DAGs as Tools for Variable Selection
DESCRIPTION:Gettin’ daggity with it: Using DAGs as Tools for Variable Selection\n\nEver pondered whether to include a variable in an analysis – is the variable necessary\, will its inclusion/exclusion introduce bias in the analysis?  Why is the variable important anyways – is it a mediator\, a moderator\, a confounder some combination of these??? \nThis course introduces how to incorporate DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs) in analysis planning to help think through what variables to collect and use (or refrain from using) in an analysis. \nTopics include: \n\nIntroducing the structure of DAGs and the rules for using them to guide variable selection\nA deep dive into the types of variable relations captured in DAGs with emphasis on mediation\, moderation\, effect modification\, confounding and colliders and their potential to introduce bias in analysis\nHands on example of how to create and evaluate DAGs in R using the package daggity\n\nUse of DAGs may help inform data collection and analytical plans in ways that enhance reproducibility. \nCourse prerequisites: None. Knowledge of regression analysis and R is helpful but not required. \nRegistration and a refundable deposit is required to receive Zoom link. Deposit will be refunded upon attendance of course. \nTo learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Monday\, April 20\, 2026 10:00 AM\n to 3:00 PM EDT\n at Online.

SUMMARY:Carolina Recovery: Weekly Process Group
DESCRIPTION:Carolina Recovery: Weekly Process Group\n\n\nThis is a mutual-support group facilitated by Student Wellness staff for students in\, seeking\, or curious about recovery. Please reach out here or email recovery@unc.edu if you’re interested in joining or want to ask about other substance use resources! \nOur support group goals are the following: \n\nCommunity support: Helping students foster peer support networks; presenting safe and attainable space for students to be honest with themselves and others about struggles and achievements; prioritizing facilitation over leading the group (students become leading participants); reminding students to look for similarities across seemingly different lived experiences. Focus on diversifying and making recovery spaces as inclusive as possible through an intersectional lens.  \nRecovery capital: Acknowledging students’ skills and strengths; discussing and specifying goals and areas of improvement; planning actionable objectives; and recognizing the value of being where our feet are now. Each month\, we will incorporate skills for managing stress and triggers and clarify student values that may positively impact recovery.  \nEmpowerment: Encouraging students to share their experiences and utilize their agency for recovery\, academics\, interpersonal relationships\, and the other eight dimensions of wellness. Prioritizing strategies to build students’ resiliency through topics and themes they can apply throughout adulthood. \n\n**Please note that this space is exclusively for people in or seeking recovery and is NOT open to observers or for educational purposes.  \n\n\n\n\n From Monday\, April 20\, 2026 5:30 PM\n to 6:30 PM EDT\n at Student Wellness.

David has recently led study tours to and with the Oxford Arts Society and Goodenough College\, and is currently delivering a lecture series at 92NY in New York City. At the same time\, he has just published his latest book with Harvard University Press—Hubris: Pericles’ Parthenon Project and the Invention of Athens—a remarkable achievement in an already distinguished career. \nDavid’s work continues to exemplify what the study of antiquity can be at its best: rigorous\, humane\, and vividly alive to the present. Whether in the lecture hall\, on stage\, or guiding students through the landscapes of the ancient Mediterranean\, he brings the classical world into immediate and compelling focus. \nThis conversation offers a fitting culmination to the semester—and no prior background in Greek or Roman literature is required. All who are interested in epic\, history\, leadership\, or the long arc of cultural memory are most welcome to join. \n :https://unc.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ftYbZ2ZtTF2F-hyCvE1wkA \nHosted by the Transatlantic Forum for Education and Diplomacy (TFED) in partnership \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026 12:30 PM\n to 3:15 PM EDT\n at FedEx Global Education Center — Room 1009.

SUMMARY:Getting Proper about Prompting: An Introduction to Prompt Engineering for Social Science and Survey Research (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Getting Proper about Prompting: An Introduction to Prompt Engineering for Social Science and Survey Research\n\nTake a glance through recent news or social media and you would be hard-pressed not to see mentions of chatbots and artificial intelligence (AI) methods aimed at generating text\, images and other content.  Recent work by Eloundou and colleagues (2023) explored the potential impact of these types of generative AI on labor markets\, and survey research\, specifically was among the top two most impacted industries.  Professor Andrew Ng has been cited as saying “AI won’t replace human workers\, but ‘people that use it will replace people that don’t.’”  Much of the way researchers in the social sciences and survey research are incorporating AI into their workflow involves some type of prompting.  Prompt Engineering approaches along with more nuanced fine tuning approaches are being used and refined to better incorporate more robust approaches for AI incorporation into the research process.  In this shortcourse we will provide an overview of the emerging field of prompt engineering and illustrate how a prompt engineering approach and problem specification mindset can be useful for maximizing the utility of large language models\, specifically\, within social science.  Concepts and experimental approaches will be illustrated using several real-world\, grounded and published work.  The shortcourse also incorporates an experiential component that encourages participants to apply basic concepts that we cover in the course in real-time as we work on exercises together in the later part of the course. \nRegistration and a refundable deposit is required to receive Zoom link. Deposit will be refunded upon attendance of course. \nTo learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Thursday\, April 30\, 2026 1:00 PM\n to 5:00 PM EDT\n at Online.
