SUMMARY:24th Annual Linguistics Spring Colloquium (Cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:24th Annual Linguistics Spring Colloquium\n\nEvery spring\, the Linguistics Graduate Student Association (LGSA) at UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Linguistics puts on its annual Spring Colloquium\, a celebration of research in linguistics. This year’s event includes a poster session featuring the work of our department’s graduate students\, followed by a keynote talk titled “On the nature of word-internal language mixing” by Dr. Faruk Akkuş of the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. The Colloquium is free for all who present or attend; there is no registration fee. \nThis talk deals with the language mixing patterns in the verbal and nominal domains of Turkish\, Anatolian Arabic and Northern Kurdish\, initially investigated in Akkuş 2025. In that study\, I proposed the No-Reversal Constraint (NRC)\, which prohibits switching back to a language that has been externalized earlier in the derivation. Focusing on rarely studied trilingual settings\, this talk broadens the empirical coverage of this constraint\, and addresses two issues left unaddressed in Akkuş 2025. I demonstrate that word-internal language mixing takes place even in the absence of phonological and morphological integration\, and in some cases phonological processes do not track each other. As such\, this phenomenon cannot simply be a case of borrowing\, and the NRC applies regardless of the level of integration. Moreover\, I demonstrate that the NRC applies at the domain of morphosyntactic words\, regulating the possible permutations of switches\, and further show that the NRC is a structural\, not linear-based constraint \n\n\n\n From Friday\, April 24\, 2026 3:30 PM\n to 6:00 PM EDT\n at Smith 107.

SUMMARY:Henderson Lecture featuring Emily Knox- "Book Banning in 21st Century America: An Ongoing Threat to Information Access”
DESCRIPTION:Henderson Lecture featuring Emily Knox- “Book Banning in 21st Century America: An Ongoing Threat to Information Access”\n\nJoin the School of Information and Library Science and the Center for Information\, Technology\, and Public Life (CITAP) for an evening celebrating information\, scholarship and community! \nWe invite you to attend the Henderson Lecture featuring Emily Knox\, interim dean and professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, as the keynote speaker. The lecture\, “Book Banning in 21st Century America: An Ongoing Threat to Information Access\,” will take place on Friday\, April 24\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Freedom Forum\, Carroll Hall Room 305\, and will be followed by a reception with hors d’oeuvres and conversation from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. \nThe first 50 people to RSVP will receive a complimentary copy of Emily Knox’s “Book Banning in 21st-Century America.“ \nHR 7661\, or the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act\, recently passed out of the U.S. House Committee on Education. The bill is the first attempt at federal legislation in the post-2020 book banning era. The bill is short\, but it provides insight into the types of information that can be seen as threatening. What would the effect of this bill be? What can it tell us about book banning more generally\, and how do we respond to this type of legislation? \nAbout the Lucille Kelling Henderson Lecture:\nThe Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile K. Henderson\, SILS faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960). As an excellent teacher\, administrator\, counselor and adviser\, Henderson made many contributions to the University and to the profession. She died in 1990 at the age of 95. To learn more about the Henderson Lecture and previous speakers\, click here. \nMore about Emily Knox:\nEmily is interim dean and professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests include information access\, intellectual freedom and censorship. She is a member of the Mapping Information Access research team. \nThe second edition of her book\, Book Banning in 21st Century America (Bloomsbury)\, was published in January 2026. Her previous book\, Foundations of Intellectual Freedom (ALA Neal-Schuman)\, won the 2023 Eli M. Oboler Prize for best published work in the area of intellectual freedom. She has been interviewed by media outlets such as NPR and the New York Times and also testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on book banning. \nEmily previously served on the boards of the National Coalition Against Censorship\, the Freedom to Read Foundation and is a former editor of the Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy. \nShe received her Ph.D. from the doctoral program at the Rutgers University School of Communication & Information. \n\n\n\n From Friday\, April 24\, 2026 5:30 PM\n to 7:15 PM EDT\n at Carroll Hall\, Freedom Forum\, Room 305.

SUMMARY:AI in Research Series – Using AI in Survey Research: Practices and Pitfalls
DESCRIPTION:AI in Research Series – Using AI in Survey Research: Practices and Pitfalls\n\nAI in Research: Driving Innovation Forward\n \nDiscover how artificial intelligence can streamline workflows\, uncover hidden patterns\, and empower breakthroughs in your field. Learn practical applications of AI through Odum Institute AIR series that can revolutionize your research process.\nThis course offers an overview of how AI tools such as large language models (LLMS) can enhance early stages of the survey process\, including item generation\, questionnaire evaluation\, and survey refinement. This session will highlight practical ways LLMs such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can support researchers while also addressing common pitfalls. Participants will learn best practices for questionnaire design focusing on writing questions\, response option development\, and question ordering. Ideal for researchers seeking to incorporate AI thoughtfully and efficiently during survey development work. The first half of the session will provide structured lecture content\, and the second half will offer time for participants to ask questions and discuss the specific projects they are working on. \nRegistration is required to secure your spot. To learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 1:00 PM\n to 2:00 PM EDT\n at Online.

SUMMARY:Attention on Campus: A Paid Student Focus Group Study
DESCRIPTION:Attention on Campus: A Paid Student Focus Group Study\n\nUNC undergraduates are invited to participate in a paid research study exploring how attention actually unfolds in daily campus life. The study looks at what helps—and what disrupts—students’ ability to feel present\, mentally engaged\, and focused in classes\, study spaces\, campus environments\, and co-curricular activities. Your perspective will directly inform ongoing research on student experience at UNC. \nParticipants will attend one 60-minute focus group with 6–8 other students\, facilitated by trained graduate researchers. The session is a guided but conversational discussion designed to surface honest insight. No preparation is required. Focus groups will be held in a UNC classroom; the specific location will be shared after registration. Participation is open to current undergraduate students who are at least 18 years old. \nMore information here: tarheels.live/attention/student-focus-groups/ \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 28\, 2026 2:00 PM\n to 3:00 PM EDT\n at Location will be shared with registered participants!.
