SUMMARY:Kenan Theatre Company - Vanities
DESCRIPTION:Kenan Theatre Company – Vanities\n\nThis bittersweet comedy is an astute\, snapshot-sharp chronicle of the lives of three Texas girls. In 1963\, Joanne\, Kathy\, and Mary are aggressively vivacious cheerleaders. Five years later in their college sorority house\, they are confronting their futures with nervous jauntiness. In 1974\, they reunite briefly in New York. Their lives have diverged and their friendship\, which once thrived on assumptions as well-coordinated as sweater sets\, is strained and ambiguous. Old time banter rings false. Their attempts at honest conversation only show they can no longer afford to have very much in common. https://drama.unc.edu/ktctickets/ \n\n\n\n From Sunday\, April 19\, 2026 2:00 PM\n to 3:30 PM EDT\n at Kenan Theatre.

SUMMARY:Building Energy System Resilience in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Building Energy System Resilience in Southeast Asia\n\nGlobal challenges ranging from climate change to geopolitical instability are reshaping energy affordability\, reliability\, and sustainability. This talk examines how to build more resilient energy systems in Southeast Asia using several case studies. I will highlight a stakeholder-driven energy modeling effort conducted under the ASEAN Green Futures initiative\, which develops iterative pathways to expand electricity access\, enhance grid reliability\, and reduce environmental impacts across the region. I will also explore mobility-energy integration in Thailand\, focusing on vehicle-to-grid applications and car sharing as strategies to increase system flexibility and support distributed energy resources.  Together\, these cases offer able transferable lessons for resilient energy planning in Southeast Asia and the US\, reflecting opportunities enabled by the Bringing Southeast Asia Home project supported by the Luce Foundation including regional collaboration\, capacity building\, and the development of scalable clean energy solutions. \nhttps://asia.unc.edu/event/building-energy-system-resilience-in-sea/ \nReception to follow. \n\n\n\n From Sunday\, April 19\, 2026 4:30 PM\n to 5:30 PM EDT\n at Nelson Mandela Auditorium\, FedEx Global Education Center.

SUMMARY:Gettin’ daggity with it: Using DAGs as Tools for Variable Selection
DESCRIPTION:Gettin’ daggity with it: Using DAGs as Tools for Variable Selection\n\nEver pondered whether to include a variable in an analysis – is the variable necessary\, will its inclusion/exclusion introduce bias in the analysis?  Why is the variable important anyways – is it a mediator\, a moderator\, a confounder some combination of these??? \nThis course introduces how to incorporate DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs) in analysis planning to help think through what variables to collect and use (or refrain from using) in an analysis. \nTopics include: \n\nIntroducing the structure of DAGs and the rules for using them to guide variable selection\nA deep dive into the types of variable relations captured in DAGs with emphasis on mediation\, moderation\, effect modification\, confounding and colliders and their potential to introduce bias in analysis\nHands on example of how to create and evaluate DAGs in R using the package daggity\n\nUse of DAGs may help inform data collection and analytical plans in ways that enhance reproducibility. \nCourse prerequisites: None. Knowledge of regression analysis and R is helpful but not required. \nRegistration and a refundable deposit is required to receive Zoom link. Deposit will be refunded upon attendance of course. \nTo learn more and register\, click HERE. \n\n\n\n From Monday\, April 20\, 2026 10:00 AM\n to 3:00 PM EDT\n at Online.

SUMMARY:Colloquium Series: The Triple Connection: Black Hole Mergers\, Electromagnetic Counterparts\, and Galactic Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium Series: The Triple Connection: Black Hole Mergers\, Electromagnetic Counterparts\, and Galactic Black Holes\n\nSpeaker: Smadar Naoz\, UCLA \nTitle: The Triple Connection: Black Hole Mergers\, Electromagnetic Counterparts\, and Galactic Black Holes \nAbstract: Black holes are detected through a variety of methods\, each revealing a different part of their nature. These include gravitational-wave emissions that detect the mergers of compact binaries\, X-ray radiation that captures the dramatic accretion episodes of black hole binaries\, and astrometry\, which measures the dance of a star around an unseen companion. Despite significant progress over the past decade\, we still lack a unified framework that connects these seemingly disparate populations. In this talk\, I will explore how stellar triples may provide such a connection. I will discuss the role of tertiary companions in driving black hole mergers detectable by LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA\, in shaping the formation of accreting X-ray binaries\, and in leaving behind wide black hole–stellar systems like those now revealed by Gaia. I will show how the aftermath of a black hole merger in the presence of a tertiary companion can produce rare but detectable electromagnetic counterparts\, and how this channel may account for a significant fraction of observed black hole binaries. In short\, triples may open the door to linking gravitational-wave events with electromagnetic counterparts and galactic black holes\, offering a new way to piece together the life stories of black holes.  \n\n\n\n From Monday\, April 20\, 2026 3:30 PM\n to 4:30 PM EDT\n at 207 Phillips Hall.

Their attempts at honest conversation only show they can no longer afford to have very much in common. https://drama.unc.edu/ktctickets/ \n\n\n\n From Monday\, April 20\, 2026 5:30 PM\n to 7:00 PM EDT\n at Kenan Theatre.

David has recently led study tours to and with the Oxford Arts Society and Goodenough College\, and is currently delivering a lecture series at 92NY in New York City. At the same time\, he has just published his latest book with Harvard University Press—Hubris: Pericles’ Parthenon Project and the Invention of Athens—a remarkable achievement in an already distinguished career. \nDavid’s work continues to exemplify what the study of antiquity can be at its best: rigorous\, humane\, and vividly alive to the present. SUMMARY:Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures
DESCRIPTION:Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures\n\n\n\nEmpower UNC: Responding to Disclosures is a training collaboration between Violence Prevention and Advocacy Services (VPAS) and the University Compliance Office (UCO). This updated training replaced UNC’s former HAVEN training.  \n  \nEmpower UNC equips students and employees with information\, resources\, and strategies to respond to disclosures of harassment\, sexual misconduct\, interpersonal violence\, and stalking in an informed and compassionate way.  \n  \nThis training consists of two parts. The first part is an online video that students and employees will receive upon registration and may complete asynchronously at their convenience. The second part is an in-person\, live training session facilitated by staff from VPAS and UCO.  \n  \nAfter completing part two of the live\, in-person training\, students and employees will receive an Empower UNC placard and sticker. If you choose\, you may display these to acknowledge your training completion and signal your commitment to supporting individuals affected by gender-based violence and harassment within our campus community. \n  \n  \nPlease note: Graduate and professional students are welcome to register for the student or employee version of the training\, depending on which feels most aligned and appropriate for their role(s) on campus.  \n  \nFor questions about Empower UNC: Responding to Disclosures\, or to change or cancel your registration\, please email violenceprevention@unc.edu  \n  \nWe are committed to making our training accessible to all participants. Reasonable accommodations will be considered as requested. Please share any requested accommodations by emailing violenceprevention@unc.edu \n\n\n \n\n\n\n From Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026 5:00 PM\n to 7:30 PM EDT\n at Carolina Union Room 3407.
