Dr. Margaret A. (Peggy) Jablonski came to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August 2004 after serving over two decades at five other campuses in New England. Recognized as a leader in the field of student affairs, Jablonski served as a dean in the student life areas at Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Connecticut. Currently as the lead student affairs administrator at UNC, she works jointly with students, faculty and staff to create and maintain a climate that fosters student learning and development while enhancing a strong sense of community for almost 27,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. She has supervised most major areas of student affairs on more than one campus, including Housing, Student Union, Student Health, Dean of Students, Counseling, Judicial Affairs, diversity programs, orientation, and campus recreation facilities. Jablonski has been involved in the design of two comprehensive “one stop shopping” centers which provide both academic and student life support functions. She led the revision of three codes of student conduct. She has reviewed and redesigned numerous programs from leadership development to a housing master plan.
Jablonski served as a full time faculty member in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and has been adjunct faculty at Brown University and North Carolina State University. She has taught graduate courses in higher education policy, leadership theory, women’s issues, and student affairs. Jablonski has served on several dissertation committees and has taught undergraduates through the first year experience courses at two institutions. Her research interests include gender and leadership; spirituality in higher education; higher education policy; and the history of higher education. She has edited a monograph on Student Spirituality and Student Affairs Practice (2001) and has consulted on many campuses related to this topic. Jablonski is a frequent presenter at international and national conferences.
Jablonski has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and currently serves as the Editor of their Journal. She has volunteered on several conference program committees and chaired the Region I conference. She is active in a variety of community organizations, including serving on the Board for the Orange County Habitat for Humanity.
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Jablonski holds a doctorate in Education from Boston University. Her dissertation, which focused on the leadership styles of women college presidents, received awards from the university, the National Association for Women in Education and the Massachusetts College Personnel Association. She earned Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Jablonski has a passion for the Irish culture, people, and music and has traveled to Ireland numerous times. She has spoken at the Irish Student Services conference, and has conducted a study tour of four Irish university campuses. Her other interests include golf, hiking, the environment, history, the arts, travel, and holistic health. She loves college sports, basketball in particular, and March Madness. She maintains a house on Cape Cod and enjoys retreating there several times a year.
