Our Programs: Safe Zone: Kick-Off Celebration 2001

This year the Safe Zone Committee, comprised of students, staff, and faculty from across campus, decided to try something different and hold a celebration to formally kick-off this year's Safe Zone program. The celebration gave us a chance to "come out" to the wider campus community, and to do so in conjunction with National Coming Out Day.

The celebration was a huge success!!!! Speakers included Provost Robert Shelton, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Sue Kitchen, Student Body President Justin Young, founder of Diversions Marcus Harvey, and Student Body Vice President Rudy Kleysteuber. Fred Hashagen, the LGBT Administrative Assistant moderated the program. The crowd also enjoyed performances from the Acordants, Tar Heel Voices, and the Walk-Ons as well as slices of tasty rainbow cake.

This year, we gave students, faculty, staff, and campus/community organizations the opportunity to publicly support the vision of Safe Zone by signing the Safe Zone Pledge:

"I pledge to work towards making the UNC community a safe and welcoming place for persons of all sexual orientations."
