General Safety

Stay in touch with friends, and make an effort to spend time with people other than your partner.

Continue doing activities that you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself.

Make new friends. Increase your support network.

Consider taking a self-defense class.

Think about joining a support group or calling a crisis line. You are not alone!

Consider checking out a 911 Cell Phone from the Dean of Students Office.

Safety on Campus

Try not to be alone. Walk with a friend or classmate to classes. Use Point to Point and SAFE escort.

Tell your professors, Resident Adviser, and other school personnel what is happening.

If harassment/assault is happening on campus, call the Dean of Students Office at 966-4042 to learn about your options.

Change your routine. Don't always come to campus the same way, or arrive at the same time. If you ride the bus or drive, try to have someone else with you.

Safety at Home

Try not to be alone at home. If you are home alone, make sure all doors and windows are locked and secure.

Consider telling your roommates what is happening. They can help you screen telephone calls or visitors.

Put a list of phone numbers in a convenient place that includes emergency numbers, supportive friends you can call when you're upset, and crisis lines.

If you live in the same residence hall as your abuser, contact your Area Director about getting a room change

Safety With Your Partner

Try not to be alone with your partner, or to be alone in an isolated or deserted location. Go out to public places.

Try to double date or go out with a group of people.

Let other people know what your plans are and where you'll be.

Try not to be dependent on your partner for a ride.

Always keep change or your cell phone with you, in case you need to make a phone call for help.

Trust your instincts! If you feel you're in danger, get help immediately. Do not minimize your fears.
