From The Equal Opportunity Office: AFFIRMATION
OF THE UNIVERSITY'S POLICY ON EQUAL OPPORTUNITY (NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY)
The University has adopted an internal policy on non-discrimination on the basis
of sexual orientation. Thatpolicy provides that educational and employmentdecisions
should be based on individuals' abilities and qualifications and should not
be based on irrelevantfactors or personal characteristics that have noconnection
with academic abilities or job preference. Among the traditional factors which
are generally "irrelevant" are race, sex, religion, and national origin. It
is the policy of The University of North Carolina atChapel Hill that individuals'
sexual orientation betreated in the same manner. Such a policy ensuresthat only
relevant factors are considered and thatequitable and consistent standards of
conduct and performance are applied. This policy prohibiting discrimination
on the basis of sexual orientation doesnot apply to the University's relationship
with outside organizations, including the federal government, the military,
ROTC, and private employers.
If you experience harassment based on sexual orientation, you may report it through the Office of the Dean of Students or with the Office of the Student Attorney General (966-4084). The Instrument of Student Judicial Governance states in: II.D.1.p. "Conduct that is directed towards a particular person or persons and discriminates on the basis of religion, creed, sexual preference, age, national origin, or disability in (a) University Employment, including the conditions, working environment and privileges of such employment, (b) opportunity for participation in any University benefit, service, or offering, or (c) participation in University sponsored extracurricular activities" may result in expulsion or suspension, or lesser sanctions.
