For academic questions, first try your advisor, then the dean of the General College (for first-year students and sophomores) or the dean of your upper college (for juniors and seniors).

For questions or problems about disciplinary matters, the honor code, assault or harrassment, diversity issues, alcohol policy, or crisis management, contact the Dean of Students.

Can my parents access my disciplinary records? (Can I see the disciplinary records of my son or daughter?) The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has adopted certain provisions in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). Parental access to student records may be restricted by federal law or institutional policy.

What do I do if I need to miss class for a funeral?
Please contact your advisor or the dean of the General College or the College of Arts and Sciences. The office will send out a letter to your professors and instructors that informs them of the reason you will miss class. In part, the letter reads:

While this student will appreciate whatever assistance you can offer regarding missed lectures and assignments, this letter is solely to provide information. According to Faculty Legislation, "Except for those students who are actually in the infirmary and for those who are absent from class because of their participation in organized and authorized University activities," the instructor is the University agent who must decide whether an absence is to be excused or not. Under the Faculty's legislated policy only the instructor is to exercise this responsibility.

How do I reschedule an exam? Your advisor or academic dean can decide if you are eligible to reschedule an exam, and help you do so if you are eligible.

I'm having problems with registration. How can I get this cleared up? Most of these problems -- regarding PIN numbers, advisors, hours earned, and the like -- can be answered by your academic advisor. If a "hold" has been placed on your registration, you should contact your academic advisor or the registrar to find out who initiated the hold and how to get the hold cleared. If the hold is designated as S1, you should still be able to register, but you won't be able to get a copy of your transcript without consulting the Dean of Students.

When is...? (Where can I see a university calendar?)
UNC publishes an online calendar with full schedules for the fall and spring semester, an abbreviated schedule (Chancellor's calendar) for the coming academic year, exam schedules, and registration schedules.

How do I get a Dean's Certification for graduate or professional school?
