The Code of Student Conduct The Honor Code and Campus Code
The Honor Code
"It shall be the responsibility of every student
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to obey and to support
the enforcement of the Honor Code, which prohibits lying, cheating or
stealing " (Instrument of Student Judicial Governance, Section
II.A)
The Campus Code
"It shall be the further responsibility of every
student to abide by the Campus Code; namely, to conduct oneself so as
not to impair significantly the welfare or the educational opportunities
of others in the University community." (Instrument of Student
Judicial Governance, Section II.B)
These two brief sentences constitute the awesome responsibility
that students attending the University of North Carolina have shared
for over 100 years. The Honor Code and Campus Codes together serve to
govern the University's expectations for the behavior of all its students.
Although the Chancellor has authority over all matters of student discipline,
he has delegated that responsibility to the students themselves.
As such, students are given the freedom of intellectual
exchange and the respect to protect the ideas and works of others in
the community. The Honor Code prohibits lying, cheating or stealing;
therefore protecting the integrity of academic work and personal freedom.
The Campus Code protects the personal rights of Carolina students to
pursue any goal, while admonishing those that abuse the freedom.
Such a strong spirit of honor does not stop at the end of our brick-laden
sidewalks, but follows each Carolina student wherever they are. It is
because of this great tradition that graduates of the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill know their diligent study will always
be respected, both while they are here and after they leave.
