Margaret A. Jablonski, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, is a veteran student affairs administrator. As the lead student affairs
administrator, she works jointly with students, faculty and staff to create and maintain
a climate that fosters student learning and development while enhancing a strong sense of
community for more than 26,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Dr.
Jablonski oversees the development of policy, programs, and services that promote
learning both inside and outside the classroom.
Carolina’s Division of Student Affairs has approximately 275 employees, more than
a $50 million budget, and includes the Campus Y, University Career Services,
the Frank Porter Graham Student Union, Counseling and Psychological Service,
Dean of Students, Disabilities Services, Office of Fraternity and Sorority
Life, Student Health Service, Housing and Residential Education,
Carolina Leadership Development, and Carolina New Student and Parent Programs.
Jablonski came to UNC after serving as Dean for Campus Life at Brown University
for three years. As Dean, she led efforts to reorganize student life and
housing areas, redesign the non-academic discipline system and develop a
student leadership program. She designed the process to evaluate programs
resulting from a $150,000 Hewlett Foundation grant promoting pluralism at Brown.
From 1999-2001, Jablonski served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
at the University of Connecticut. Highlights include co-leading a $14 million
renovation of a new student services center and revising a student conduct code
and related judicial processes.
Jablonski was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1994-1997), where she supervised
numerous student affairs areas. She worked closely with faculty housemasters
in residence halls and taught a first-year seminar on leadership. Her other
posts included Assistant Dean for Residential Services and Director of Housing at
Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Victim Assistance Program Coordinator and Assistant
Housing Director at Boston University; and Family Housing Coordinator and Greek
Affairs Director at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst campus.
She has been a sorority house director and is a certified mediator.
Her experience includes several teaching roles, including service as a visiting
assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst from 1997 to 1999.
At UMass, she taught courses on education policy, research and administration and
coordinated the admissions process for the Master’s Degree program in higher education.
At Brown, Jablonski held an adjunct Faculty appointment in the Taubman Center for Public Policy.
Jablonski has written or co-written several articles for professional or campus publications
and is editor of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators
(NASPA) Journal, managing the online publication process and coordinating
a 40-member review board. She has been on the Journal’s editorial board
since 1998 and has held several other national and regional posts for the
association, including service on the Board of Directors. She has made
presentations and presented papers to numerous national and international professional groups.
Finally, she has consulted with or conducted training for staff at over sixty campuses
around the country and in Ireland.
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Jablonski holds a doctorate in Education from
Boston University. Her dissertation, which focused on the leadership styles of
women college presidents, received awards from the university, the National
Association for Women in Education and the Massachusetts College Personnel Association.
She earned Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Jablonski is passionate about learning and seeks to provide opportunities for others
through staff development programs to learn new knowledge and skills.
She has served as a role model and mentor to many in higher education through service on
dissertations and other writing projects and numerous formal and informal programs.
Jablonski is an avid outdoors person and works to promote a holistic approach to health,
wellness, and the environment. She counts gardening, biking, hiking, and golf among her
favorite activities. She also supports the arts, especially theatre and music.
