During the academic year 1998-99, the Assessment Team surveyed UNC-CH juniors as to self-reported activities outside the classroom. This survey was intended to gain not only an understanding of what UNC-CH students engage in outside the classroom, but which activities they consider the most meaningful, and what they learned as a result.
This open-ended survey represents the initial step in a larger, more comprehensive survey of our student activities. Below are tables representing the raw data we received from the respondents (this survey was sent by e-mail to 200 randomly selected juniors; 31% replied). A complete listing of the data can be obtained in the Student Affairs Library, 110 Carr Building, or e-mail Dr. Cynthia Wolf Johnson, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Student Learning, Assessment Committee Chair.
The next step will be to find natural groupings of responses to form a survey for a broader group of students. All data collected will be posted on this site.
The open-ended survey questions were the following:
1. During a typical week, what activities do you engage in besides attending class, studying, sleeping or eating?2. What three activities are the most meaningful to you?
3. What have you learned as a result of these activities?
4. Are there activities you wish you had done?
5. What is the most important lesson you have learned outside the classroom?
For Question #4: Are There Activities You
Wish You Had Done?
