This website is intended for those who wish to learn more
about what the Division of Student Affairs' Student Learning Team does,
its make-up and its outcomes. We welcome feedback from UNC-Chapel Hill's
students, faculty, and staff , as well as colleagues from across the
country. You may contact us at: survey@listserv.unc.edu.
The Student Learning Team, composed of Student Affairs professionals,
works on the philosophy of promoting seamless learning environments
for undergraduate and graduate students. In so doing, the Student Learning
Team:
- involves faculty and students in its attempt
to develop stronger learning communities;
- designs and supports collaborative efforts of
students, faculty and staff so that students can integrate knowledge
and experience in and out of the classroom;
- cultivates partnerships-in-learning;
- promotes the integration of knowledge and experience,
encouraging students to develop to their fullest potential;
- provides pertinent information to students, faculty
and staff; and
- serves as educators of faculty and staff colleagues,
as well as students, in the implementation of the Student Learning
Imperative (http://www.acpa.nche.edu/sli/htm)
and other learning philosophies.
In the Summer of 1997, the Student Learning Team was created in an attempt
to more intentionally focus the work of Student Affairs on student learning
and corresponding learning outcomes. Initially, the team examined initiatives
that could assist with this goal. Keeping in mind the University's Intellectual
Climate Task Force Report (1997), the team began by focusing on improving
the first year experience, conducting an environmental assessment, offering
alternative programming, and designing outcomes assessment. The team
has met monthly each academic year and refocused its goals over the
summers. A more specific review of history can be found in the section
entitled initiatives/accomplishments.
Now that the framework for the Student Learning Team has been established,
and aspects of its work have been tested, members of the Student Learning
Team are in the process of creating a vision and plan for the next five
years, 2001-2005. This vision will focus on providing students with
extraordinary experiences that will help to bridge a gap often found
between learning inside and outside the classroom. It will include a
focus on learning outcomes and assessment that demonstrate the value
of said learning, and will involve those who help to ensure successful
experiences; peers, faculty and staff. This vision, along with corresponding
plans and goals, will be posted on this site when completed.
