Technology Without Borders

Technology Without Borders
Technology without Borders (TWB) is a committee of the Campus Y dedicated to bridging the digital divide in all its forms, both at home and abroad.  This mission is accomplished through digital literacy workshops, tutoring, and providing computer and internet access to families and individuals that could not otherwise afford it.TWB's community impact is currently growing at an unprecedented rate.

While the scope of TWB's work had previously been confined to Abbey Court were residents were provided free wireless internet network and partnering with the Kramden Institute to provide 50 families with school aged children with free computers, we are now moving into four new communities and partnerships. This semester, TWB offered digital literacy workshops/tutoring sessions for the homeless/at-risk population in the area at JobLink on West Franklin Street. We are teaching skills to assist in finding and applying for jobs, communication, and exportable skills that participants can take to employers.

TWB is also:

  • Partnering with Project Literacy to conduct digital literacy workshops in the Rogers Road community. That program is beginning with approximately seven students and similar classes at El Centro Hispano in Carrboro are also starting.
  • Designing and implementing an after-school computer program at a Durham Charter school for 4th and 5th grade students who otherwise have limited access to computers thanks to a grant from the Kenan-Biddle partnership.
  • Serving in an advisory role for two students planning independentsummer international projects. One member will be traveling to Kenya and another to Bengal. They plan to take laptops with them for local schools and to give teachers there a curriculum to teach students the skills they need as they enter a globalized economy.
