Advocates for Human Rights Focuses on Civil Rights Locally & Globally

Campus Y Committee Advocates for Human Rights (AHR) focuses on civil rights issues around the world and at home. The committee promotes awareness and encourages discussion of social justice and injustice, using both as a launch board for activism.

On a rolling basis, AHR  has committees that tackle different projects. Education & Outreach strives to connect UNC students with members of the local community through human rights workshops in local middle and high schools. Advocacy & Lobbying inspires political action surrounding social justice issues. They recently held a petition signing and letter writing campaign for an anti-trafficking bill and are working to coordinate a lobbying date with Congressman David Price. Last year, the Burmese Partnership Project started a sewing cooperative to empower refugees living in the Triangle Area. This year, they are looking to expand this partnership by partnering with Micromarket to sell bags produced by the co-op and to become more directly engaged in the community through tutoring and cultural events.
